Isofix for Dogs: Standard, Technology & Legal Position

DOXAFER® Magazine — Standard & Technology

Isofix for dogs — what the standard really means

Isofix is not an accessory label but a standardised connection between a seat and the vehicle body. Between the seat surface and the backrest of the back seat sit two fixed metal bars that belong to the load-bearing structure of the car, not to the upholstery. Whatever locks in there becomes part of the vehicle — regardless of whether a child seat, a dog seat or a dog crate hangs from it.

What you will find on your own back seat

Mandatory in the EU since 2014 — most likely in your car too

Since November 2014, every newly registered passenger car in the EU with more than one row of seats must be fitted with Isofix as standard. So it is very likely that exactly this system is also installed in your own car.

Just look on your back seat: at the junction of backrest and seat surface, at the bottom of the gap, you will find the two Isofix mounts — often marked by a small symbol, as in the picture above.

These mounts are standardised. Our seat fits into every existing Isofix.

Where Isofix comes from

The system was developed for child restraint systems, to rule out installation errors caused by incorrectly tensioned belts. The bars themselves are not limited to that, however: they are a fixed point on the vehicle, not a component of the child seat. An Isofix dog seat or an Isofix dog crate uses the same bars in the same technical way.

Why the connection matters with a dog seat

A form-fit connection — latch arm in metal bar — holds regardless of tension or wear. An object that is merely lashed down holds just as well in everyday use, but loses holding force under strong deceleration exactly where it matters.

Explained in detail in the article ISOFIX dog seat: why the fixed connection decides.

What is known about the legal situation in Germany

In German road traffic, dogs count as cargo and must be secured so that they do not shift even under full braking or an evasive manoeuvre. The legislator does not prescribe a specific securing technique for this.

DOXAFER® is a manufacturer, not a source of legal advice. For a binding legal assessment, please contact a competent legal or traffic authority.

How to tell whether your car has Isofix

A first look goes to the gap between the seat surface and the backrest of the back seat — there sit the two metal bars, sometimes marked by a small symbol. The detailed three-step guide — recognise, install, check — can be found in the article ISOFIX for dog crates: allowed or only for child seats?.

Frequently asked questions

Is an Isofix dog crate the same as an Isofix dog seat?

Yes, both terms describe the same technology: a restraint that is firmly connected to the vehicle via the standardised Isofix mounts instead of just lying on the seat.

Is Isofix only approved for child seats?

No. The mounts are a fixed point on the vehicle with no restriction to a particular type of seat.

Is an Isofix restraint for dogs in the car mandatory?

Dogs count as cargo and must be secured. Which technology is used for this is not prescribed. Binding information on this is given not by manufacturers but by competent legal or traffic authorities.

Does an Isofix dog crate fit in every car?

In most vehicles with Isofix mounts on the back seat, yes. Checking the vehicle manual is recommended.

In short

Isofix is a standardised fixing point on the vehicle, not child-seat accessory. DOXAFER® uses exactly these mounts — form-fit, without a tension strap.
